Itxassou is a traditional Basque village about 30 km from Saint-Jean-de-Luz. It is known for its black cherries, used in jam, vinegar, and liquor. You can enjoy in whichever way suits your taste the best. Be sure to visit the Centre d’Evocation in Ateka, located in the center of the village, where you can learn more about the history of Itxassou through the interactive panels. Also visit Saint-Fructueux Church, dating from the 17th century. It may seem ordinary from the outside, but the inside hides beautiful wood galleries and a Baroque style altar.  Finally, for fans of hiking, several trails start in Itxassou and will lead you to the Mondarrain and Artzamendi Mountains. If you have to choose only one hike, the one to Pas de Roland is a must. This easy 3 km walk follows the Nive and leads you to the Pas de Roland, a hole in the rock. According to legend, the nephew of Charlemagne, Roland, kicked the hole in the rock to reach his troops.
